Principal’s Message

Welcome Back!

I was just hired as K-12 Principal at BC School for the Deaf (BCSD).  I would like to introduce myself you….. I had been living in USA for 30 years and decided it was time for me to move to back to Canada.  I have three beautiful children; Jose, Chloe, Ansley and a wonderful husband Roy.

I grew up in Newfoundland, with my hearing family, who nevertheless recognized the important of my education in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.  I attended deaf school where I learned ASL and English.  That was where I was exposed to literacy early in my childhood and still love reading today.  I went on to obtain my BA in Communication Arts at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC, MA in Deaf Education/ASL at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York and I also received an Ed.S. in Change Leadership in Education at Gallaudet University and Adams State University in Colorado.  Following that I taught for 16 years and 7 years as an administrator.  I know first-handed the benefits of a bilingual education for deaf students.  I want to give the opportunity to our students at BCSD, so they can grow up with bilingual education.  I don’t stop with merely learning two languages.  As a Principal, I believe that my strong bilingual education experience and my leadership will make BCSD for continued excellence.

On behalf of the staff at BC School for the Deaf (BCSD), I am happy to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year!  We are looking forward to a productive collaboration with you to ensure our students can achieve their highest potential.  We know a strong collaboration with you will make a great difference in your child’s education.  As allies, we share the responsibility for our student’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities.

There are many great things happen at our school through family and community collaboration.  I look forward to seeing you at Parent/Teacher Interviews or community events.  The wonderful BCSD staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family.  We thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Ms. Cathy Bennett, M.S., Ed.S.
BCSD K-12 Principal
